Some companies will stop at nothing to separate you from your hard-earned money.
A couple of days ago I received a piece of mail from IDNS (Internet Domain Name Services).
Because I’ve been around the block a few times when it comes to domain name registration and renewal, I recognized it immediately as an attempt to frighten me into switching registrars and paying more.
Normally I don’t even open those envelopes — I just throw them directly into the trash. For some reason I decided to check out this domain name registration scam, and I have to admit, my jaw dropped so hard it thumped onto my chest! (You can click to see a larger version of the photo.)
These guys — who offer me the opportunity to switch to their services to “take advantage of our best savings” — want me to renew my domain name with them for only a 350% markup over what I’m currently paying.
Read that again.
Their idea of “savings” is having me pay them $45 instead of $10.98.

What a deal!
They are not the only only company to offer these “deals.” Some companies even make their paperwork look like it’s official and you have no choice but to deal with them. At least these folks tell you you’ll be switching.
Here’s the real deal — if you’ve registered your domain name with a reputable registrar online, you’ll never receive renewal notices in the mail. You’ll hear from them via email.
And if you’re happy with your registrar, there is absolutely no need to change.
